The Cherokee Capital Amateur Radio Society announces the
winner of its $500 Wal-Mart shopping card give away.
Jennifer Jones of Calhoun (C) is presented the card by club
President, James Howard (R) and club Treasurer, Felton Floyd
(L). The club wishes to thank the community for its support
in this fund raiser and hopes that you will support us in
the future.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the purchase and
upgrade of Amateur Radio communications equipment for use by
the club and area Amateur Radio Operators. The club works
with the local Emergency Management Agency to provide
supplemental communications when called upon during times of
crisis. Members of the club gather weather information
during times of inclement weather and forward this
information to the National Weather Service office in
Peachtree City by way of Amateur Radio. Forecasters can then
better issue watches and warnings using the information
provided.

GARS
also Shows off at Science night
Members of the
Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society (GARS) were invited to be a
part of Science Night at Berkeley Lake Elementary School on
Thursday evening, October 23. The event was a huge success,
with a total of 747 youngsters and parents in attendance.
With demonstrations on such things as CW, Echolink, Youth in
Radio, ARES, an HF station, an ARRL booth for answering
questions and providing follow-up materials, and that
ever-popular attraction: the laser pointer demonstration,
where students are shown that they can actually talk over a
simple Radio Shack laser pointer, the evening was fun-filled
for club members and students alike. And as a plus, many of
the parents expressed a keen interest in learning more about
the hobby.
