Mid-Month Report November 2009

Thanksgiving Greetings!

First off, let me say I’m thankful to Michael, AA4BA, Dr. Wil, NM4W, John, WB4QDX, Jeff, WA4AW, and Greg, W4OZK, for adding comments and presentations to the ARES Forum at the Georgia Section Convention at the hamfest in Lawrenceville. The forum was well attended and everyone who stopped by the booth said they enjoyed it and found the shared information helpful.

Kudos also to Steve, N4SEG, and the crew from the Alford Memorial Radio Club for the excellent job they do each year in putting on Georgia’s largest hamfest. I know there is a LOT of work going on behind the scenes to make this event happen….Great job!!

We’re taking nominations for the 2009 Georgia ARES Ham of the Year. This award is given to the ham who the judges believe has made the biggest advances in emergency communications in the state. I know you DECs and ECs have someone in your group who has made a real difference this year. This is a good way to honor them. In addition to the nominee’s personal information, we need a paragraph or two on why you think they deserve getting the award. The Committee of judges will carefully weigh the results and the winner will receive the award at the State ARES Conference in Forsyth on January 23, 2010. Nominations should be emailed to ke4fgf@arrl.net

We’re also looking for topics of concern for discussion at the session in Forsyth. As I mentioned at the forum in Lawrenceville, we are opening the morning session to anyone who wants to attend. In the past, it’s been strictly DEC s on up, but we are looking to create a more unified team for the state,  and that means everyone should have a chance to voice their concerns and get questions answered. If you have a topic you want to introduce, you can email me or your EC or DEC, who will forward it in my direction. I’m hoping to see a record turnout in Forsyth.

I’ve heard big things about the Central District in the last few weeks, like 61 stations checking in on their weekly ARES net. Those numbers are helped by a good system of linked repeaters and the people who work hardest to make all that happen are Jimmy, WB4NFG, and Mike, WM4B. I also note that Terry, KI4QFF, who took over as Houston county EC about 6 months ago, not only has them “in like Flynn” with the local EMA and EMS, but in his spare time (do any of us have that?) he’s taken a 4 member group to a 40 member group. And not to be undone, Dr. Will now has an EC for each and every county in the district.

Charles, K4GK has also reminded us that the annual 160 meter test is only a few weeks away. If you have a REALLY long wire antenna hidden away, time to get it out and dust it off. Check in to the Sunday ARES Net on 3975 kHz.for the particulars.

Guess that’s enough for this month (maybe too much?). Best wishes for a great Thanksgiving holiday to YOU and your family…‘til next month
Mike, KE4FGF

And now, the SM’s Note:

The “Midmonth Summary will generally be composed by our Section Emergency Coordinator, Mike KE4FGF, and will be largely slanted toward ARES, with a few add-ons by the SM.

The first note of November was put out too early for our STM (K4GK) Traffic Report.

Charles gets his data in by the 10th and I forgot that.  Sooo, here it is (late!):

SK note:  One of our valued members, William Black, K4BSN of Grayson passed away November 8.  Heartfelt condolences for the family.

Good Note:  Lynn Bianco reports the youngest VE in the country:  Daughter Lisa AJ4RT.  She had Extra Class at 17 but the rule of age 18 made her wait a year to qualify as VE.  You go, girl!!

That really is it for the time being,

73 all,

Gene, W4AYK, SM
