Greetings, All.

It was great to talk with so many of you at Georgia's last big fling of the year Hamfest in Lawrenceville this month. (And what a GREAT fling it was!

KUDOS to the hard-working members of the Alford Memorial ARC.) Alas, now we have a long dry spell stretching out in front of us until the Dalton ARC Hamfest comes up in February. But, pssssst! There's something special coming up in January in Gwinnett county that can tide you over nicely. That's the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society's TECH FEST, coming up on January 12. It's not a Hamfest, though there will be an ample tailgating area. Billed as the "most fun and informative winter amateur radio event in North Georgia", TECH FEST is a way for hams to share ideas and to learn more about some of the many facets of our hobby. Sound like fun? It IS! In past years, there's been booths on everything from soldering and building antennas to creating your own QSL card. Generators, coax testing, troubleshooting, and all kinds of operating modes. No telling what you might learn. Add a bunch of seasoned operators who can answer your questions, and a chili cookoff, QLF contest, and a FREE LUNCH. What's NOT to like? Gonna add some activities for our young hams this year, too. More info to come... (www.gars.org)

In the November newsletter, there was an article about the Smoked Hams, the great group of Cobb county firefighters who've recently joined the amateur radio fraternity. Alas, the name of one of these fine gentlemen was left out, and we can't have that. So, here's a special tip of the firehat to BRYAN ARMBRISTER, KI4ZJB, another of Cobb county's Smoked Hams.

The Gateway ARC recently held their elections, and congratulations are due for the following slate of officers: President- MICHAEL STANLEY, AI4PL; VP- RAY BARREN, KO4RB; and Secretary/Treasurer- TALITHA COLLINS, KI4MHH. Best wishes for a fun and successful year.

The ARRL is looking for a few good instructors. (i.e. PAID instructors) The Teachers Institutes have been a resounding success. In fact, they've been such a success that some additional qualified instructors are needed to allow for some expansion of the program in 2008. For more info, please see http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2007/11/12/100/?nc=1

The Atlanta Marathon and Half-Marathon are coming up on Thanksgiving Day, and as always, amateur radio operators are needed to provide communications. You can sign up at http://www.signmeup.com/58176. DAVID ZISKIND, KE4QLH, is heading up the communications efforts again this year, and you can contact him at ke4qlh@arrl.net

While you're signing up, you might consider another big event coming up on December 1. That's the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Christmas Parade. TIM ROSING, KC4ELV, is the communications coordinator for this event, and you can contact him at kc4elv@arrl.net

Multiple NWS offices will be on the air for 24 hours in conjunction with SKYWARN RECOGNITION DAY. 7PM November 30- 7PM December 1. (It's especially fun to provide a "sunny and seventy degrees" weather report to some of the offices in the frozen tundra of the north....)

A few nets of interest: The North Fulton Amateur Radio League is holding a Morse Code Practice net on Friday evenings at 9PM on their 145.47 machine, offering you an opportunity to learn the code, or to polish your skills.

(Just because you don't HAVE to learn it doesn't mean it ain't fun!) And on Tuesday evenings at 8PM, JIM ALDERDICE, N1ABM, is running a Cherokee Area Preparedness and Training Net on 167.700 (-) PL 123. He's been running the net for about a year now as a "forum for preparedness issues and as a vehicle for training new hams". All are welcome. The third net is a GA Piglet Net, a net designed especially for our young hams. (and for those of us who are still young at heart) It's run by our Assistant SM for Youth, BRITTNEY HANCOCK, KI4WNY, on the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society's 147.075 repeater.
Started out at 10AM, but she's decided to change the time to 2PM, to allow for a little extra shut-eye.

SILENT KEY: BILL WATERS, K4YZD. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Well, folks, that's about it for now, except for wishing you all a very happy Thanksgiving. (the only time of year you can tell someone to "get stuffed" without earning a punch in the nose!) Until next time, this is AF4FO, signing clear. Take care of yourselves. And each other, 73, Susan

QTC October: K4GA-171; K4GK-92; WB4BIK-47; WA4UJC-41; K4BEH-10; K4BAI-9

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
