 Mid-Month Report
July 2006

Well, greetings, All. We're baaaaack!!!

What? You say you didn't know we were gone?? I'm crushed, simply crushed. Seriously, we just got back from a trip to Baltimore, and we're now in the catch-up mode, and I promise that I'll try to answer all of your awaiting emails ASAP. (By the way, all of you Baltimore transplants may be surprised to hear that blue crabs were actually harder to find and more expensive up there than they are here in the Atlanta area! Go figure.)

It turned out that the timing of our trip up north was such that we were able to take in a couple of Hamfests in North Carolina; one on the way up, and another on the way back home. (My kinda sandwich!) On the way up, we went to a fest in Salisbury, and it was a friendly little event, with some indoor vendors and a nice little tailgating section.

We were surprised to run into a couple of other GA hams there, too, but no GA hams were in sight at the Cary fest we visited on the way home.

That one was a pleasant tail-gating event, and with the heat being what it was, I have a feeling it ended pretty early that day. It was already a bit on the hot side at eight that morning. It was kinda fun to travel to these fests "incognito", though the club president in Cary did graciously offer me a place to sit with the ARRL hand-outs... (thanks, but no thanks!)

It's been heartening to see the birth of multiple new ham clubs here in Georgia these past few years, and to see a number of these new clubs, as well as some other clubs who've been around for a number of years, seek to become affiliated with the ARRL or to achieve Special Service Club status. But as heartening as that is, it is equally as disheartening (and puzzling) to see how many of our long-time, still active clubs, have allowed their affiliation and/or Special Service Club status to expire. Is YOUR club still authorized to use that SSC logo, or has that authorization expired, along with your SSC status? Is your club considered an "active club", or has its affiliation expired due to failure to file a simple annual report, thus relegating your club to the dust heap pile of (shudder) "inactive clubs"???
Annual reports can be filed online at www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/biglist.html

If you can't find your club in the active file, check the (shudder) inactive file. This is a simple process, and if you have any questions about it, our ACC ROBIN CUTSHAW, AA4RC, or I would be happy to help. Also, SSC renewals can be done online at www.arrl.org/field/club/forms/fsd7/renewal.html

Only a few of you clubs have sent pictures and/or text to our webmaster about your Field Day activities this year. Thanks to those who have done so... some good stuff. How's about the rest of you? You can send your soap box stuff, or pictures (captioned, please) to k4phe@arrl.net

The Milledgeville ARC held elections this month, and the following folks were selected to lead the club for this next year: President- CHARLES PENNINGTON, K4GK; VP- HERB INGLES, W1DOG; Secretary-Treasurer-BILL MILLS, KC4AA; and Repeater/ Callsign trustee- HERB INGLES, W1DOG. Congratulations to all of these fine fellas, and best wishes for an enjoyable and successful year.

It seems that HERB INGLES, W1DOG, is really revving up and getting even more active in the ham community. Not only will he be serving as the Milledgeville club's VP and Trustee, but he has also agreed to take on the responsibilities of EC for Jones county. Thank you Herb, for your willingness to take on this important leadership role. We do appreciate you.

Next Hamfest coming up will be in Ellijay, and that'll be on August 12.

It provides a darned good excuse to get away from this awful heat and escape to the cool mountains for a day of fun. FREE and FUN. Details to follow in the August newsletter.

Well, that's about it for now. Until next time, this is AF4FO, signing clear. Take care of yourselves. And each other.

73, Susan
