Greetings, All.
The official start of summer is fast approaching,
and if today's temperature is any indication, it looks like we may
be in for another HOT Field Day this year. Used to be, by this time
of the month, I'd already presented my better half MIKE, K4HBI, with
a long list of all the sites I wanted to visit, and he'd already
come up with an attack plan (i.e. the most workable itinerary) so we
could hit them all. This year, I toyed briefly with the idea of
taking a "Final Farewell Tour" of the state... y'know, go out in
style, so to speak, but my enthusiasm for doing so was
underwhelming. Guess in trying to wrap my mind around the fact that
I'm only going to be SM for another few short months, I'm already
feeling rather lame duckish. (Is that even a word?) Considered just
visiting with those clubs who'd extended personal invitation, too,
but they're so spread out to the four corners of the state, I don't
think there could BE a good workable itinerary, even for someone as
clever as Mike. So, looks like we'll be sticking close to home. Just
relax and enjoy ourselves, and prepare for our next section manager
to take center stage.
Maybe he'll do the whirlwind thing next year. At
any rate, hope y'all have a super field day. And thanks for the
invitations.
Talking about field day, for those of you who're
going to try to gain some bonus points by making a satellite
contact, you may be in luck. That weekend, according to AMSAT
bulletin ANS-151, there will be a lot of large commercial dishes
active worldwide on 23 cm (on both SSB and CW) to commemorate the
40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Good luck!
DAVID ZISKIND, KE4QLH,
wanted me to give you one last reminder about the upcoming July 4
Peachtree Road Race. As the communications coordinator, he's still
in need of some additional amateur radio volunteers. You can sign up
online at

A sincere THANK YOU to the clubs and individuals
who have given so generously on behalf of SK SANDY DONAHUE,
W4RU. Because of your donations, and the donations from
other hams around the country, we've been able to completely cover
all of his funeral expenses, and are now in the process of building
a scholarship fund in his name. It's likely going to be a one-time
scholarship, but I'm delighted that we've been able to do this much.
NOTE: Any additional checks should be made out to ARRL and sent
directly to HQ, attention MARY HOBART, with a notation that it's for
the W4RU memorial scholarship.
Mike and I used to regularly check into the GARS
6M net, but we hadn't done so for quite a few years. We've recently
re-discovered it, and I'm pleased to report that the repeater has
undergone some tremendous improvements since the earlier days, and
the net is a lot of FUN. Check it out: Wednesday nights at 9PM.

Before I wind this mid-monthly summary down, let
me say just a few words (?) about the Atlanta ARC hamfest, held
earlier this month. It was, without a doubt, the BEST Atlanta
Hamfest in many years.... lots of vendors, great boneyard, lots of
forums and activities, and terrific attendance. Great job!
Special recognition also goes to MIKE
BOATRIGHT, KO4WX, who put together a fantastic slide show
for W4RU's remembrance service, which was held right there at the
hamfest. Sandy would've loved that there were so many people there.
(almost as much as he would've enjoyed seeing all of those UGA grads
doing a Gator chomp...)
SILENT KEY: DAVE KINSELL, KD4UDY
Sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Well, folks, that's about it for now. Until next
time, this is AF4FO, signing clear.
Take care of yourselves. And each other. 73, Susan
