 Mid-Month Report
May 2006

Greetings, All.

Greetings, All. Hmmmm, we SMs were told that the deadline for sending in these mid-monthly summaries had been changed, so that we could send it out whenever it was most convenient for us, rather than by the 16th of the month, but when I just tried to send this through the usual means, it turns out that it wouldn't be accepted.... sooooo, no problem, I'll do an end run here and send it out as an email. Different means, but same result.

Anyway, here we are, more than halfway through the month of May, and the input on where you folks will be operating for Field Day this year has been practically non-existent. It's interesting to note that the first club that sent me a formal invitation and detailed directions is actually a TENNESSEE club. (who will be operating in Chickamauga...

details on their location will be in the June newsletter) This Tennessee group has already laid out the welcome mat for anyone who'd like to join them. So, how about it, Georgia? Are you gonna be laying out the ol' welcome mat, too? Last reminder: If you want your club (or eclectic group) included in the listing of this year's Field Day Sites, you need to send me that information! Simple as that. (If you were listed last year, a note, indicating your club's name and "same as last year" will be fine.) 'Nuff said.

Next week is National Hurricane Awareness Week. (See

http://www.emergencyemail.org/hurricane2006.asp) Now, you'd think that, following the past few devastating hurricane seasons, especially after Katrina and Rita, that everyone would pretty well be "aware" of hurricanes by now, wouldn't you? But a recent article in the newspaper indicated that there's still way too much complacency about hurricanes, even among folks who live on the coast. As amateur radio operators, we're certainly more aware than other people of the importance of providing emergency communications "when all else fails". SCOTT ROYLE, KK4Z, our ARES-MAT DEC, is actively recruiting additional members for the GA ARES-MAT team. Think you've got what it takes? Your willingness to deploy, and your capabilities as a trained communicator, can make all the difference in the world in the aftermath of hurricanes and other disasters. See the www.gaares.org website for more information on ARES-MAT and on how you can become a part of this vital team.

Talking about websites, have you checked our www.arrl-ga.org website recently? BOB SMITH, K4PHE, has been busily at work, giving it all a fresh new look. Check it out! And you'll see that he's already posted some pictures and info on the GA Training and Emergency Net picnic, which was held on the 13th of this month. The thing is, Bob is like our ace catcher, waiting for you to throw him your "best stuff"... pictures from your club activities, special events, club meetings, public service activities, stories about a club member, FIELD DAY, etc. The sky's the limit! You can send your "best stuff" to me, or directly to Bob at k4phe@arrl.net (Thanks, Bob!) You all do so many terrific things. None of us can do it all, but with your help, we can at least share snippets of your experiences. (And Bob's crouched down there....

just a-waitin' for your pitch!)

COMING SOON!! Almost ready! I'm talking about the Georgia Piglets tee shirts. ANDREA HARTLAGE, KG4IUM, will be showing hers off at the Youth Dinner up in Dayton this weekend, and I wore mine to the Byron Hamfest last weekend. They will be offered for sale on our www.arrl-ga.org website, and will be offered at some of the Hamfests near you. Many thanks to ROBERT TYLER, KF4VBR, for taking this project and flying with it. Cost per shirt is only ten dollars, with a five dollar shipping & handling charge, if you want it to be mailed to you. The piglet design was created by MARY AHLS, W4NZJ, and the initial offering is for a lime green shirt with blue lettering (and of course, the terrific-looking pink piglets with their HTs) Additional tee shirt colors will also be available, and other states will even be able to order a shirt with their state name on them. This is a really FUN project, and I hope that we can get piglets, piglets-to-be, and their adult supporters all over the country "showing their colors" in support of young amateur radio operators.

I need your help. (So what's new?) There is a ham who only needs to work one more county in Georgia to have a clean sweep of all 159 counties. That one county that he lacks is Pulaski, and according to a recent database check, there are only nine hams in that whole county.

If one of those hams is YOU, or if you know one of them, with HF privileges, please let me know, so I can help this fella reach his goal. Thanks.

It's a pleasure to announce that we have added a new ADEC for the Peachtree City NWS, and that is HUEY KENMAR, KI4NGD, who's already been doing a fantastic job with the fine team of operators there. Thanks, Huey, and welcome aboard. And as one steps up,I'm sorry to say that another of our ADECs is stepping down. GARRY HARLEY, KD4NUD, has decided that he must leave his ADEC position as Digital guru for south Georgia. (he'll still BE a digital guru... he just won't carry the title!)Thanks to Garry for the fine work that he's done, and continues to do in sharing his digital know-how.

Sadly, a couple of Silent Keys to report: ERNEST CHURCH, W4DWE, and HANK RHODES, KG4UJO.
Sincere condolences to their families and friends.

Well, folks, that's about it for now. Until next time, this is AF4FO, signing clear. Take care of yourselves. And each other. 73, Susan

P.S. Don't forget that Field Day info. (That's REALLY the last reminder...)

QTC April: WB4GGS-146; AF4NS-93; K4WKT-75; K4BG-62; K4BAI-30; K4BEH-26; K4GK-25; KR4JI-4

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
