Greetings, All.
We have a couple of very special GA hams to
recognize in this mid-monthly summary:
First, CONGRATULATIONS to LARRY SCHEFF,
W4QEJ, who has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the
ARRL's prestigious BILL ORR TECHNICAL WRITING AWARD, in recognition
of his excellent two-part QST article entitled "Lightning:
Understand It or Suffer the Consequences". Southeastern Director
GREG SARRATT, W4OZK, will present this award to
Larry at an upcoming Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society (GARS) club
meeting.
GENE CLARK, W4AYK, isn't "just"
our esteemed SEC, Net Manager, and ace NCS. He is also a retired
doctor, a well-respected nephrologist who dedicated himself to
providing his patients with a better quality of life, and who, in
1976, as part of that dedication, opened the first dialysis center
in southwest GA. This Thursday in Albany, Georgia, the Dialysis
Center, Inc. will dedicate its newest facility, and by unanimous
decision, the name of that center is the CLARK HOME TRAINING
CENTER, named in honor of our own DR. EUGENE CLARK.
He is overwhelmed and humbled by this great honor, and we.... are
darned proud of him.
The Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society (GARS) held
elections at their February meeting, and by acclimation, the entire
slate of officers was re-elected for another term. (See what happens
when ya do such a good job?!) CONGRATULATIONS to the following:
President- NORM SCHKLAR, WA4ZXV; VP- EARL
WHATLEY, AF4FG; Secretary- RANDY COLLINS, N4COR;
Treasurer- DICK SANDBERG, N9SXJ; and Program
Chairman- KYLE ALBRITTON, W4KDA. Best wishes for
another outstanding year.
A little more than a week ago, I alerted you to
the presence of a trojan horse virus on the GA ARES website, and
warned that if you had downloaded from or uploaded to that website,
that your computer could possibly be infected with this nasty
booger. Also told you that not all virus protection programs were
capable of detecting the presence of this virus. A couple of you
then presented an interesting question. Like, "You told us we may
have this virus and our program may not detect it.... so NOW what?"
Just in case there are any others out there who may wonder the same
thing, but didn't ask, ROBERT TYLER, KF4VBR, says
that two of the best anti-virus programs that he knows of are:
Webroot, which is available at most computer and
office supply stores. Cost is about
thirty-nine dollars, and this family package allows it to be used on
multiple computers at the same time. The other program is FREEWARE,
and that is Malwarebytes, which is available for
download at
http://www.malwarebytes.com
The PAULDING ARC (Dallas) is looking for some
"tech presenters for their normal 4th Tuesday of the month meetings,
and for their September hamfest" on any topics related to amateur
radio. If you're willing to offer a presentation for these folks,
please contact JORGE DE LA TORRE, at
ki4sgu@arrl.net
COMING UP: This Saturday, February 21, is the
next Peach State Chapter 49 QCWA meeting, to be held in Norcross, at
the Ryan's Restaurant, near the intersection of Peachtree Industrial
and Jimmy Carter Boulevards. Eat at noon, with meeting to follow.
Topic: a show and tell on home-brew projects (With this crew, that
promises to be verrrry interesting.) ALL are welcome. Next Saturday,
the 28th, is the DALTON HAMFEST. YAY! Let the Hamfest season
begin!!!
SILENT KEYS: It is with a heavy heart that I
report the following SKs. TONY KING- W4ZT; MALCOLM
"MAC" MACDONALD, W8MPC; WAYNE OWSLEY- W4AX;
GEORGE PECK- W4IW.
Sincere condolences to the families and friends
of each of these fine men.
Well, folks, that's about it for now. Until next
time, this is AF4FO, signing clear. Take care of
yourselves. And each other. 73, Susan
