 Mid-Month Report
February 2006

Greetings, All.

Well, here we are, halfway through another month, and it's time for another mid-monthly summary. If there are more typos than usual in here, that's because we were up until 4 AM last night, chasing Peter One. (but we caught him!!!)

First off, I'd like to thank all of you who took the time to write a letter to the AJC reporter regarding the somewhat one-sided article he wrote about BPL. You did a terrific job, and your efforts are very much appreciated. (perhaps a little less so by the reporter, who told me that he received a LOT of emails from hams!) So, thank you, thank you, thank you.

A very generous ham in Winder has offered to donate equipment for the purpose of setting up a complete working station at a school in that area. He would also be open to donating it to a local Scout group. If any of you work or volunteer at a Winder school or with a local Scout group, and would be interested in accepting his kind offer, please let me know, and I'll put you in touch with him.

Talking about students, it's a pleasure to announce that LISA BIANCO, KG4UIB, won a GA Section certificate for her participation (and for making the most contacts) in this year's Kids Day event. CONGRATULATIONS to Lisa, and to her proud dad LYNN, KN4YZ. You can see more information, as well as Lisa's smiling face, on the "Youth Piglet Pages" on our www.arrl-ga.org webpage. (Bet she had fun, too!)

Next week is Severe Weather Week, as declared by Governor SONNY PERDUE, with Monday being set aside as "Family Protection Day". For those of you running an ARES net that evening, it would be a good oppoetunity to discuss ways that families can prepare for emergencies. (You can find a host of material for this on the FEMA, GEMA, Red Cross, and other websites.) Wednesday, the 22nd, will be the statewide tornado drill, kicking off at approximately 9AM. The Peachtree City NWS will be operating on 3.975 MHz, as well as on the linked repeater system. Local ARES groups are encouraged to run local nets and to relay the number of check-ins to the NWS. How's about carrying an HT to work with you that day and checking in from the workplace? Let's see how many counties we can have represented in this year's drill! (NOTE: Should the weather on Wednesday actually BE severe, the drill will be held on Friday.)

CONGRATULATIONS to the newly-elected slate of officers chosen to lead the Gwinnett ARES for the next year: President- NORM SCHKLAR, WA4ZXV; VP- EARL WHATLEY, AF4FG; Secretary- BECAH JUBON, W3BEC; Treasurer- AMY WOODRICK, KE4IKF; and Activities Chairman- DAVE BRUSE, W4DTR. Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable year.

CONGRATULATIONS, also, to a couple of very special GA Hams of the Year: The ARC of Augusta bestowed this honor on SID "HUTCH" HUTCHINSON, WB4GGS, and the Alford Memorial ARC chose to honor LARRY DODD, K4LED. Sid is one of our NTS stars, and has earned enough Brass Pounder awards to paper his whole shack, and is also a valued field day mover and shaker, club member, and friend. Larry is one of those "git 'er done" kinda guys, quietly going about the business of enthusiastically participating in club and ARES projects and activities. He also runs a terrific website at 101science.com, which looks like a great resource, especially for our young people who might need a little help with homework or a class project. So, congratulations to both of these fine fellas, both very worthy choices to have been named Ham of the Year.

CHARLIE CARROLL, WD5ECL, asked me to make a very public expression of THANKS from him and the gang at the Brunswick P.D. to GREG TILLMAN, N4VAD, for the day he spent in teaching a technician class there recently. So, THANK YOU, Greg. You done good.

Coming up right around the corner, on the 25th, is the Dalton Hamfest. Sure hope you can make it! This one seems to get better and better every year. FYI: There will be an ARES forum at 10 AM, and a tri-service MARS meeting at eleven. If you do make it to this Hamfest, please stop by the ARRL booth and say Howdy. Our esteemed Southeastern Director FRANK BUTLER, W4RH, and our Vice Director, SANDY DONAHUE, W4RU, will also be there. We'd all love to see YOU there. (Happy, Sandy? I mentioned your name...)

Silent Keys: SAMUEL COUCH, WA4GVK; BRAIN FORD, KC4LYS; and STEVEN HOUGH, KB4HPQ Sincere condolences to the families and friends of each of these fine men.

Well, folks that's about it for now. Time for a nap. Until next time, this is AF4FO, signing clear. Take care of yourselves. And each other. 73, Susan

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
