Georgia Section On My Mind

February, 2010

Wet enough for you?  (Not cute!)  Some of you have driveways and more under water.  Some have been trapped on a highway or off-ramp due to flooding—no retreat available.  Should we give more attention to monitoring 146.52?  It is a good radio, but useless unless the rest of us listen.

So what else is new in the Georgia Section?

Notice that we have two new DEC’s:  for Georgia State Patrol Steve Bramham W4SKB, and for South East District Guy McDonald K4GTM. We also welcome Wayne Gay, K4MQ who passed his exam and is now part of the Amateur Auxiliary as an “OO”. Welcome, guys!  There is much work to do.  Thanks for stepping up to the plate!

Why don’t we hear more from the Amateur Auxiliary?  These 700 amateurs do much more listening than talking, and when they contact one of the rest of us, it is to assist us in being better and legal operators.  They work in the background out of the lime-light, but the FCC has made it clear that this service is vital to them in making the Amateur Service largely self policing.  Better ourselves than them!  The would-be OO must first pass an examination (and some fail, at least their first attempt) and then is considered by the Section Manager and OOC for recommendation to ARRL for appointment.  Thanks, guys!

From the ARRL we have a new president:  Kay Craigie, N3KN (former First VP). Steve Ewald of ARRL in Newington reports that more help is being brought in the take care of the DXCC backlog.  So you have not been forgotten.  And, finally, the new question pool for the Technician class license exam has been released and will be used beginning July 1, 2010.  The old pool expires June 30, 2010.  So, new books and new exams then.

Definitions:  “Amateur” comes from the Latin “Amo”, and defines activity done for the love of it, i.e. not paid. “Professional” indicates a commitment to an ideal.  Many are paid, but are not committed to anything.  Some are voluntary, yet are totally committed to the work.  So most hams are both “Amateur” and “Professional”.

SK-Darragh McCluer WA6IKS January 29.  Memorial Service will be held in Acworth February 13 in the Oak Grove Community Room.
Len Di Maso,Jr, K2YRW.  A moment of silence, while we ponder the loss of these friends.

In Haiti:  Amateurs continue deployment with SATERN.  Haitian amateurs are also active.  Note from Julio Ripoli WD4R documents frantic efforts by hams there with relays in US to get emergency care for 6 year old child with requiring cornea transplant for survival in the rubble of Haiti (otherwise blind!).  Other similar efforts are documented.   Nice article by CNN about Haitians using “low tech radio” [No, I don’t think so] to carry out emergency communications (http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/01/20/haiti.amateur.radio/index.html).  “When everything else fails”… “Tip o’the Hat” to Diana of NGARC and GARC.

Please take time to read the new report from the standing NERPC (National Emergency Response Planning Committee) of the ARRL:  http://www.arrl.org/announce/reports-2007/january/NERPC-32aa.pdf.   ALL AMATEURS interested in EMCOMM will read this document.

The annual “Techfest” in Lawrenceville was again very successful.  Many learned about simple, and complex things related to amateur radio.

Kudos to S.E.C. Mike KE4FGF and others for the ARES conference in Forsyth January 23.  Good information from the speakers.

We did have a tornado drill February 4 and according to STM Charles K4GK it proved that amateurs in Georgia are ready and willing to help in time of need.  Activity was as follows:

Total VHF/UHF checkins:  308.  Total HF checkins Statewide:  139.

Total counties reporting:  83.  Estimated man hours:  547.  Time in operation:  1 hr. 5 min.

Preliminary plans are being discussed concerning field day and operations at the Thomasville EOC. Lee/W5VRV, 12 hours covers my time as net control for the Georgia Traffic Net, Georgia Traffic & Emergency Net, and checking in to the nets each day. I was net control for a total of 17 sessions.

Seminole/K4TPD, January produced several days of heavy rainfall. Only one produced flash flood conditions resulting in the temporary closing of eastbound lanes of US 84 near Iron City, GA, State Road 91 about 2 miles south of Donalsonville, and State Road 39 about 17 miles south of Donalsonville. This information was forwarded to the NWS in Tallahassee via the internet. The Corps of Engineers has done an outstanding job keeping Lake Seminole from flooding. The Flint River and Chattahoochee River both have been above flood stage several times upstream during January. The Apalachicola River at Blountstown (downstream) has been above flood stage most of the month. Although flood waters on these rivers did not impact anyone locally they have caused the closing of the oyster harvesting in Apalachicola Bay. Finally we had 14 consecutive days of temperatures below freezing in Seminole County. Most of the daily low temperatures were in the low to mid twenties. This set a record of consecutive days below freezing.
